STATEMENTS ON THE OSHAWA COURTHOUSE INCIDENT AND SUDINE RILEY – JAN 23 2026

By January 28 2026 the number of Statements in Support of Ms. Riley and opposing violence against lawyers, defence counsel, women who work in the justice system, Black and racialized legal professionals, had grown such that cataloguing photos of the Statements was becoming cumbersome.

On January 29, 2026 I started collecting and making them available on this Google Drive Link and I added new statements as they were released to this “repository” until Feb 3rd. The link will stay accessible to anyone through this page, however, for so long as there’s interest in it, indefinitely.

Some Notes – and Disclaimers – About my own Repository of Statements

The Statements collected here and in the Drive are just some that were released by organizations and individuals in the wake of this deeply troubling incident. More than 30 such statements are reproduced here. They run from Jan 26 through to Feb 3rd — an arbitrary end point I chose because this was a hugely labour-intensive project I couldn’t maintain, not because anybody who spoke later had nothing important to add. In fact, some did. However, waiting too long dilutes their impact generally.

At about the midpoint of the process, organizations began contacting me directly via DMs on social media and by email asking that their statement be included here, on my personal blog. That tells me this is something that is powerful and while I stumbled upon doing it organically and fortuitously, people who know more about organizing movements than I do have told me how uniquely effective it can be in highlighting who’s missing – who has chosen to stay silent. Something to keep in mind as you scroll through this page.

Finally, I do not represent this catalogue as complete and it’s important to note the collection’s limitations.

  • What I’ve compiled here are statements in support of Sudine Riley or expressing alarm and seeking an independent investigation into the incident as reported – I’ve not included the Statement released by the Durham Regional Police Association (DRPA) which disputes the allegations and expresses distaste for criminal defence lawyers
  • Some statements could not be readily reproduced as they were either only made directly to media who reported on them or privately to the organizations’ members (or both, but not publicly)– the most important example of this type of statement was the one made by the President of the Ontario Crown Attorneys’ Association (OCAA) as reported in the Toronto Star by Jacques Gallant.
  • Another example of what’s effectively impossible to catalogue are Statements made only on social media by an organization or individual. For instance I could only locate the Schlifer Clinic’s statement on their socials, such as Instagram, FaceBook and LinkedIn.
  • The Law Society of Ontario (LSO) did eventually comment on the situation but only via a news release on their website, and linking to such pages was outside my capacity here. Same with British Columbia Civil Liberties Association’s (BCCLA’s ) very strong statement and the County of Carleton Law Association’s (CCLA) statement, both released Feb 2 or 3.
  • Finally, I am terrified of TikTok and therefore cannot access viral TikToks in support of Sudine Riley created by lawyers like Betti White, which has reportedly received at least a half million views and 50 thousand likes and by @cupcakeconsulting, Founder of the Ontario Association of Black Paralegals.
  • Also, I had to stop collecting the Statements effective Feb 3rd, because of overwhelm and running out of steam. If an organization couldn’t pull a statement together in 10 days in the wake of something like this, I also believe the impact of anything they might now say is so diluted that it risks ringing hollow.
