CMHA National Conference – Panel on Involuntary Treatment Approaches to Drug Use Sept 23 2025 – recap

This is My LinkedIn Post About this Event

My thanks to the organizers of the Canadian Mental Health Association‘s National Conference for including me on a panel to discuss responses to attempts and introduction of coercive legislation mandating involuntary detention and forced treatment for drug users. It was a privilege to be on a panel with @Zoë Dodd and others.

This is a topic we must urgently talk publicly and frankly about now that Ontario has abandoned the one thing that did save lives – Safe Consumption Sites and harm reduction. Coercion is next and it comes at a very, very heavy cost.

Yesterday’s opportunity was a true privilege – let’s roll up our sleeves and get real. I had hoped to avoid all this in Ontario, as for a while we led in a sensible way on this issue, but now that we’ve lost the plot, let’s at least align behind reason in opposition to what is to come.
