I’ve sat on a bunch of Boards starting back in 2013 with the CLA for 8 years, since 2017 on LAMDA, in between there NARPA, currently on WiCCD and Pilot Place Society’s Board. At least five boards in 12 years anyway.
Until it was helpfully explained to me TODAY, however, I don’t think I fully appreciated that the AGM is the one meeting a year that belongs to us – in this case Law Society members – affectionately known as licensees.
We get to ask questions and “debate” motions.
This year at the Law Society of Ontario’s Annual General Meeting there is only one motion – mine.
There’s nothing I’d love more than if you showed up and and engaged in a violent agreement with me and the other 77 THOUSAND legal professionals governed by Convocation.
So What Can you Expect at the LSO AGM on Thursday September 18, 2025 staring at 5:15 pm?
First, you have to register to “attend” so you may have a speaking part at the event.
You would do that here:
https://lso.postelwebcast.com/2025/registration.php
Others can watch on Zoom without registering.
The Agenda for the AGM is set by by-laws (By-law 2)
More information about the AGM always available on the LSO’s webpage dedicated to it here
https://lso.ca/about-lso/governance/annual-general-meeting
The Treasurer will take us through the Agenda items in the order prescribed by by-law 2 as follows:
Agenda for meeting
7. The annual general meeting shall consider the following matters:
1. Minutes of the previous annual general meeting.
2. Reports on the work of the Society and of the committees of Convocation.
3. Financial statements.
4. Matters of professional interest that are related to the work of the Society.
By-law located here: https://lso.ca/about-lso/legislation-rules/by-laws/by-law-2
The Financial Reports for 2024 are available here:
The Annual Report for 2024 is not yet available but will be posted to the AGM webpage before the meeting.
Annual Report for 2023 with smiling headshots of former Treasurer Jacqueline Horvat and former CEO Diana Miles for comparison here:
https://lso.ca/about-lso/governance/annual-report/annual-report-2023
After the presentation of the Financial Statements, we are UP under Item 4
“Matters of professional interest that are related to the work of the Society.”
My motion will then be called upon.
I get to introduce it and provided it is seconded as I anticipate, THEN
Licensees will have the opportunity to debate the motion.
The Treasurer may set time limits for debate and will advise those attending the AGM what they are when the motion is reached on the agenda.
So come and “Debate Me!” – if I know the membership, this debate will be lop-sided.
I have yet to hear one reason voiced by one licensee to suggest we’re not entitled to this disclosure.
But I’d love to hear your voice added to mine. And then count the votes in support of transparency.
