Justice Sheilah Martin of the Supreme Court of Canada delivers Keynote Address to WiCCD on the occasion of our First Anniversary – February 8, 2023

This was one of those once in a lifetime events we never forget.

WiCCD’s members were honoured to hear from The Honourable Justice Sheilah Martin to help us mark this significant milestone. Our first anniversary in existence.

President Sid Freeman made some opening remarks chronicling WiCCD’s many accomplishments during the year.

Justice Martin’s speech was inspirational and invigorating for our members.

Our daily routine in the trenches as criminal defence lawyers can be incredibly stressful.

During a time that so many women are leaving this practice area, to hear the encouraging words of one of the nation’s preeminent Jurists was life-affirming in ways none of us could have expected.

For me personally, it was a career highlight to have he privilege of co-moderating this event with my good friend, co-author, cherished colleague, usually cohort and co-counsel and once upon a long ago mentee, Sarah Rankin.

All in attendance have sore cheeks from smiling for a full hour solid.

We are deeply indebted to Justice Martin for taking the time to be with us and celebrate with us tonight.

Here are a few memories we will always cherish.
