Preliminary Survey Results – Sexual Harassment and Assault of Women Law Students and Lawyers in Criminal Defence – Canada – December 10-13 2022

I am conducting an anonymous and confidential survey of women and gender diverse criminal defence lawyers in Canada.

The survey was launched on December 10, 2022 and that’s the date of the first version of this post.

The post has been updated however to reflect the most current responses as of December 13, 2022.

THE SURVEY DEFINES THE TERMS REFERENCED AS FOLLOWS:

For the purposes of this survey, we organize sexual harassment into three categories:

(1) Verbal / Non-verbal Harassment: When someone gives another person unwanted sexual attention through verbal or written comments or conversation – including online or on social media, or through noises or actions at a distance;

(2) Physical Harassment: When someone forces unwanted physical contact on another person including things like for example unwanted massages or touching your hand, sometimes under pretense of comforting or being “friendly”

(3) Sexual Assault: Forcing any unwanted sexual touching or act. This includes anything that is captured by our Criminal Code offence of such an assault.

THESE ARE THE PRELIMINARY RESULTS BASED ON THE FIRST 72 HRS and 46 RESPONSES

What is being shared are aggregate graphic summaries of the responses to some of the questions.

No comments, context, or descriptions of the various forms of harassment are shared here or will be shared anywhere at any time, as per the parameters of this Survey.
