Justice Martin will address WiCCD’s Membership at 6 pm to 7 pm EST on Feb 8 2023 to mark WiCCD’s milestone first anniversary. Keynote address will be followed by members’ Q and A. The event will be virtual and a Zoom link will be provided to those who are registered, closer to the date. The event is restricted to WiCCD members –  you must join as a member first.

THE HONOURABLE SHEILAH L. MARTIN SUPREME COURT OF CANADA

Justice Sheilah L. Martin holds a Bachelor of Civil Law and a Bachelor of Common Law from McGill University, a Master of Laws from the University of Alberta, and a Doctorate from the University of Toronto. Justice Martin worked as a researcher and law professor at the University of Calgary from 1982 to 1986. From 1991 to 1996, she was Acting Dean and then Dean of the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Law. Until her appointment to the bench, Justice Martin first practiced criminal and constitutional litigation and then civil litigation in Calgary. She appeared at all levels of court, often at the Supreme Court, and was awarded a Queen’s Counsel. Justice Martin was appointed to the Court of Queen’s Bench for Alberta in 2005. She served as well as a Deputy Judge for the Supreme Court of Yukon from 2009 to 2016, when she was appointed to the Courts of Appeal of Alberta, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut. She was appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada in December 2017. She has been involved with judicial education throughout her career.

La juge Sheilah L. Martin a obtenu un baccalauréat en droit civil et un baccalauréat en common law de l’Université McGill, une maîtrise en droit de l’Université de l’Alberta, ainsi qu’un doctorat en sciences juridiques de l’Université de Toronto. La juge Martin a travaillé comme chercheure et professeure de droit à l’Université de Calgary de 1982 à 1986. De 1991 à 1996, elle a été doyenne par intérim, puis doyenne de la faculté de droit de l’Université de Calgary. Jusqu’à sa nomination à la magistrature, la juge Martin a plaidé en droit pénal et constitutionnel, puis en droit civil, à Calgary. Elle a plaidé devant tous les degrés de juridiction du système judiciaire, souvent devant la Cour suprême, et elle a été nommée membre du conseil de la Reine. La juge Martin a été nommée à la Cour du Banc de la Reine de l’Alberta en 2005. Elle a également agi en tant que juge suppléante de la Cour suprême du Yukon de 2009 à 2016, date à laquelle elle a été nommée à la Cour d’appel de l’Alberta, de même qu’à celles des Territoires du Nord-Ouest et du Nunavut. Elle a été nommée juge à la Cour suprême du Canada en décembre 2017. La juge Martin a œuvré dans le domaine de la formation judiciaire tout au long de sa carrière.
