I am very honoured to be the sole Canadian Board member of NARPA, since 2019.
NARPA is the National Association of Rights Protection and Advocacy and it is a unique and amazing organization. It unites clients – persons with lived experience of mental health issues – various mental health professionals and lawyers, non-lawyer and other advocates, all united against coercion in psychiatry.
You can learn more about NARPA on our webpage here:
Although I only joined the Board three years ago, I have been going to NARPA Conferences for probably 25 years now. They are an annual highlight and one of the most important learning experiences I’ve had throughout my career. I really encourage anyone who cares about mental health and the law to attend. Once you go to one conference, you’ll be back over many years to come!
We are very excited to hold our first in person conference since the onset of the pandemic.
It will be held in New Jersey, right by the Newark airport – easy access – Oct 26-29, 2022.

Unprecedented Intervention by Psych Survivors in Precedent Setting Cases in Canada’s
Top Court” – Jennifer Chambers, Executive Director, Empowerment Council; Anita

Editor’s Note:
*Technically, I do not hod a “J.D” – I refused to swap my LL.B. from the Faculty of Law at the University of Toronto that I obtained in 1990 for a J.D. when the school switched the name of the degree. But the idea is I have an undergraduate degree in law, and for this one purpose of NARPA’s conference I am happy to have my sole little LL.B. degree Americanized!
