I am running for re-election as Toronto Director in the CLA 2015 Fall Election, seeking another two-year term.
CLA limits us to 250 words in our Election Statements – while I elaborate on what I seek to accomplish in the coming, term, here is the limited Statement I have already made:
ANITA SZIGETI – I’d be grateful for the opportunity to continue as Toronto Director. Here is what I’ve done during my first term: (1) I showed up for work – I have a perfect attendance record at all regularly scheduled meetings of the Board and all Committees I’ve chaired or been on – which is a LOT of meetings! (2) I did the work: (a) Chaired the Mental Disorder Portfolio, co-ordinating the work of 8 volunteers from the Membership, including comprehensive submissions on Legal Aid’s Mental Health Strategy and Written and Oral Submissions to the Senate on various reforms regarding NCR accused. I also co-chaired a CLA CLE on mental disorder law, which was high in content and low on price, yet still profitable for the Association. (b) Sat on the most complex, difficult, labour-intensive and time-consuming Committee – Legal Aid – I attended dozens of meetings to negotiate more certificates to the private bar and advocate for counsel of choice, accomplishing significant gains here for mentally disordered accused but also all criminal law clients; I also took on members’ issues with audits and took action. (c) I Chaired one and sat on another ad-hoc Committee, regarding Bencher election Endorsements and another equally delicate and divisive issue. Every task I undertook got my full attention and I contributed my views (after consultation with the membership on the listserv and off) with integrity, politely but firmly advocating for what I thought was right. I’d like to keep at it for another term, if you agree. Thanks! Anita
