Women Litigating in the SCC – Family Law

SCC Case File #41061 Heard: Feb 11 and 12, 2025

Kuldeep Kaur Ahluwalia v. Amrit Pal Singh Ahluwalia

This case is about a tort of family violence – so technically not criminal law

However there are many fantastic women arguing in the SCC

Counsel for the Appellant is Julie Hannaford who is up first

In my opinion, Julie is the best litigator of her generation alongside Mary Eberts.

Personally my career has somehow been blessed with both these giants of the profession as mentors – Mary early in my career and Julie more recently.

If you want to see what perfection looks like on her feet check out Julie’s first 45 minutes in this case. Martha McCarthy as co-counsel is also fabulous up next.

So many other great performances.

Among them, our very own Neha Chugh for a coalition of interveners appears on Day 2 of these hearings and puts in powerful, insightful submissions on behalf of South Asian communities.

Women are fantastic appellate litigators – better and more compelling than most of the men – my view.
