As many of you will know, I was among the founders of this new Association, the amazing group known as Women in Canadian Criminal Defence (WiCCD) – pronounced WICKED!
Happy to celebrate our first half Anniversary on July 4, 2022 with 330+ members across Canada.
It all started with just a handful of amazing women in a virtual room – our First Executive:

Our listserv is busy, active, supportive, collegial and happy. The Women and gender diverse lawyers and law students in our forum treat each other with professionalism, care and genuine good humour. I couldn’t be more proud of the space we have created. WiCCD has hosted no fewer than seven free CPD events well attended by members on practice issues, financial advice, ethics and also held virtual socials. We welcomed distinguished guests like the Treasurer of the Law Society of Ontario.
We have paired 60 new lawyers and law students with 20 senior women mentors for our annual mentorship program. We are currently at work on new initiatives including a fabulous mentoring event. More CPDs coming up in the fall. We have a growing body of volunteer admin staff who contribute meaningfully and collaboratively to running our expanding organization and burgeoning membership.
Recently we have begun our Find Your Niche Series hosted by the amazing Maya Shukairy, where she focuses on interviews with Women who found their happy place in sub-specialties within the criminal law.
Our social media coordinators and amazing volunteer staff have created a fabulous social media presence for WiCCD across all platforms – members and all those interested can now follow us on Twitter, InstaGram, TikTok, LinkedIn and we have our own YouTube Channel!
