This very moving discussion actually took place on February 22, 2022, one of the longest days of my career, if not life.

On the day we recorded it, I was also participating in two other training / teaching sessions in between hearings…..

Anita Nowak is such a skilled interviewer, her questions were so insightful, that she somehow managed to get the best out of me, despite my exhaustion.

This podcast / interview is definitely one of my favourite things I’ve ever done, perhaps even the best.

Recorded on February 22, 2022 with Anita Nowak – One of my Favourite Things I’ve ever been part of – THANK YOU ANITA!!!

Empathy is something I think about a lot. Anita very kindly gave me a real opportunity to explore my own connection to the topic. I am eternally grateful to her for including me in this amazing podcast series.

We spoke about a LOT of things related to purposeful empathy!!

Just a few topics canvassed:

  • Why is Empathy an Important Skill for Lawyers to Have?
  • Empathy in Law School Curricula
  • What drew me to the practice of mental health law
  • Interacting with clients in mental health crises
  • How I’ve maintained optimism
  • The Impact of COVID-19 on persons with mental health issues and on defence lawyers
  • How my work with mental health justice clients has changed me personally
  • My tips on fostering empathy in kids
  • My tips for fostering self-empathy
  • Drawing boundaries and ending toxic relationships
  • The time I experienced purposeful empathy someone else showed me
  • Unpaid Articles (oddly enough both topical and at the root of my favourite all time anecdote)

As it happens, I had no idea the session was being video-recorded. I wore that Pat McGrath Flesh 5 lippie just for fun, for Anita and myself. Turns out the recording is available as audio or video on a host of platforms.
