About Jill:

PRACTICE: Criminal defence, mental health, digital surveillance and privacy, artificial intelligence law. Predominantly appeals at all levels of appellate courts, some trial work (mostly arguing pre-trial legal issues for other lawyers). Hopelessly underfunded legally aided and pro bono cases are a specialite de maison.

OTHER PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE: Former senior lawyer member of the Consent and Capacity Board; former staff lawyer to the Hon. Stephen Goudge on the Commission of Inquiry into Pediatric Forensic Pathology in Ontario; former part-time Crown prosecuting criminal cases on a letter of retainer with the Attorney-General of Ontario.

TEACHER: Former adjunct professor at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law, teaching Evidence and the Law of Homicide; Former adjunct professor at Osgoode Hall Law School, teaching Evidence. Frequent organizer and speaker at continuing professional development programs for lawyers and judges on a variety of topics including criminal law, mental disorder law, evidence, law and technology, digital privacy, AI law, and women in the legal profession.

PUBLICATIONS: Co-author of A Guide to Mental Disorder Law in Canadian Criminal Justice (LexisNexis, 2020); co-editor and contributing author of Litigating Artificial Intelligence (Emond, May 2021); co-author of forthcoming commissioned law reform paper, AI Case Study: Probabilistic Genotyping DNA Tools in Canadian Criminal Courts (Law Commission of Ontario, June 2021). Author of numerous articles and book chapters including, “Mom’s Rea: Motherhood, Criminal Defence, and Guilt,” in Women and Criminal Justice (Durville Publications: 2018).
